Well, That Was Awkward

This week I was remembered an experience that I had almost five years ago! It started when my Mother-in-Law was watching Sister Wives. Alan said, "Oh yeah, I saw their daughter at City Creek the other day." I don't know if you watch the show but they have a daughter going to school here at Westminster. Please understand that I don't hate the Sister Wives, but that the church I belong to doesn't support plural marriage and that is what makes the following story so good.

It was December of 2009 and I was getting groceries for my sister's birthday dinner. I was in a bit of a hurry as we wanted to get the party started. As I grabbed the last thing I needed and was headed to the check out, I came around the corner of the aisle I ran right into an older couple from my ward. Now- this couple was sort of rough & tough. They had been in biker gangs and things like that but were actually really nice. A bit unconventional perhaps but I liked them just the same. They asked me how I was doing and apologized for my recent breakup. How did they know about this breakup? Because the boy I was dating was in our ward as well. He and I grew up there so we had known each other for a long time and the ward was a bit shocked when it ended and naturally the entire ward knew about it. They asked me how I was holding up and I replied that I was doing fine and thanked them for thinking of me. They then told me that they had someone they'd like to set me up with. This is how that conversation went down:

"We know the best boy and want him to take you out!"

"Oh really?"

"Have you ever ridden a horse?"

"Never."

"Well, how about you come over to our place and we will get him to come as well and he can teach you how to ride a horse. Then you can have a picnic in our backyard and it will be so romantic!"

"Well... I guess that might be fun..." (how do you say no to an elderly couple?!)

"He is a bit older and thinking it is time to start a family. He comes from a poligamist family but he is just looking for his first wife right now."

Excuse me? What did she just say?!

"And when he is ready to add to your family you will be the 1st wife so you get to be in charge of all the other wives!"

I don't think I concealed my surprise very well when I told them that I actually wasn't up for dating quite yet and that I would give them a call should I change my mind and that I had to go.

As I left, I could not believe what just happened and thought, "Well, that was awkward." I never did go on that date and have since then found the perfect guy and get to always be his #1.

I hope you got a laugh out of that story like I do every time I think of it nowadays. What is the most awkward date set up you have had? Post a comment and let me know! Have a great weekend!
